Telling our Story: Authentic Representation of Disability on the Screen and Beyond

For the Microsoft Ability Summit, I put together and moderated a panel on authentic representation. The panel featured: Bryan Stromer and Meghan Carpenter Microsoft, Christina Mallon and Taras Wayner, Wunderman Thompson/WPP and Storm Smith, BBDO In this session, Microsoft Marketing leaders share a candid conversation about how they craft authentic representations of disability across different forms of media and storytelling. Learn how to keep people with disabilities at the core of your messaging while shining a light on the technology that empowers all of us.

Microsoft Office Demo Video with Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella

Opportunity: For National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), I worked with the CEO communications team to develop the script for demo showcasing Microsoft’s accessible technology. After the script was developed, I was able to share the demo with our CEO.

 

Microsoft Office Education Ethnographic Research

My Responsibilities:

  • Worked with internal engineering team and external vendor to coordinate scope of project

  • Recruited local university students to participate in research

  • Managed project budget

Challenge: How would Microsoft Teams show up to a Summer Camp in Royal Tunbridge Wells, UK planned by WeWork?

My Role: Project Lead

My Responsibilities:

  • Lead initial ideation and overall event strategy

  • Manage Microsoft Budget / Event Spend & Prioritize accordingly

  • Work with internal Microsoft Creative Studio and WeWork Partnerships Team to create a unified vision.

  • Manage logistics (legal, negotiations, wrap up, etc.)

Ways that I Collaborated:

  • Worked with Microsoft Legal, Microsoft Finance, Microsoft Creative Team to prepare for event

  • Worked with WeWork Partnerships Team, WeWork Legal Team, WeWork Finance, WeWork’s contracted event company.

Microsoft 365 Creative Studio Accessibility Guidelines

Challenge: The Microsoft 365 Creative Studio creates over 100,000 unique creative assets a year. However, I saw that many of theses assets were not as inclusive as they could be. Working with studio leadership and our internal design team, we created the first ever “Microsoft 365 Creative Studio Accessibility Guidelines”.

My Role: Project Lead

My Responsibilities:

  • Developed and pitched initial project proposal

  • Worked with Microsoft Accessibility Team to gather content

  • Worked with internal creatives to design look and feel of guide

  • Led socialization strategy and launch of the guidelines

Ways that I Collaborated:

  • Worked with Microsoft Accessibility Team to develop content

  • Socialized across Microsoft 365 marketing organization.

Re-imaging Microsoft E-Commerce Field Communication Strategy

Challenge: Microsoft operates e-commerce stores in 100+ countries across the globe. However, our communication was scattered across platforms (Skype, SharePoint, Excel, Outlook) and we received feedback that information was difficult to find.

My Role: Project Lead

My Responsibilities:

  • Evaluated internal & external tools that could be used for managing field communications

  • Identified Teams & pitched strategy for migration for Teams

  • Led internal roll-out and adoption.

Teaching 1,000s of Kids to OWN IT

Who knows better the peer pressures that students in a school face than those students themselves?

When an anti-bullying presentation conducted by an adult from outside their school fell flat, Bryan Stromer, then a senior at the NYC Lab School for Collaborative Studies in Chelsea, thought to himself that the students could do it better.

“Students are the ones in school every day; we know what the issues are, so we can be the biggest problem solvers,” Stromer said.
